    Art and culture

    According to ingarden.

I think that the author of this sculpture may have been very inspired, you can see the textures of the stone, the fantasy of trying to pretend the wet clothes, the very delicate feathers of the wings, the shape and its structure.

The author must have been very happy with god, like everything he made was succesfull.

I really like the sculpture because it is like representing divine things, religious things, and it looks like the author made it with so much effort, that it transmits the happiness with which he made it.

    According to Sartre

According to sartre this would be art too, because it would express happines, beauty, perfection itself.

The sculpture provokes feelings of happiness and hard work.
    (For me)

  2. I like this piece because it shows a lot of movement; I like the way that it seems that the wind is moving the dress, its a great effect and the details are awesome.

The piece is, by itself, art, but we need to understand what it is, and we must imagine the sensations of the details of the sculpture; for example; if we know that the piece was suposed to be in a boat, then we can feel the salty breeze and then, we understand why the dress is transparent and we can even imagine the wind moving it.

In that way, the aestetic object turns in to art, at least for me.

Victoria de Samotracia is a very ancient sculpture made of marble.
    A little history
In a niche above the sanctuary of the Great Gods, celebrates a victory at sea: the goddess has alighted on the prow of a galley, resisting the winds of the storm, the right hand undoubtedly lifted. This is a votive offering of the people of Rhodes for a win from the early second century BC The attitude and movement of drapery announce the reliefs of the Pergamon Altar.
I think that the sculpture is very interesting and beautiful, because have defined features,is a representation of a woman with different characteristics.

I like this sculpture because the way it is made.

First of all, it is made of marble so it really looks nice. Second, if you look at it closely the author tried to made it like if it was wet. The clothes are like wet but in a way that looks very real.

It looks, by the way the sculpture is standing, that the angel or any other creature that might be, was very strong, tall and important to some people.

The manual skills that the author had are just amazing. You can appreciate the effort that the author put into it, because even in our times aren't artists as skilled as this one.

Well, I liked this sculpture because it’s too old and I liked the effects given by the author. I liked the effect where the sea it’s kind of moving the women´s clothes and it looks like if the clothes were wet.
Each detail makes this sculpture show the creativity of the Greeks, Greeks used to use these sculptures in their flats to show to the people when they win a battle.
The only thing that I didn’t like it’s that the women doesn’t have a head, cause it makes you imagine how would it be the women and that it’s not attractive for me. Also I think that our feelings could change if we see the face, because if the women it’s ugly we are not going to have the same interest as if it’s beautiful, that it’s my point of view about this sculpture.

This is an awesome sculpture, it is very detailed, the way the author
assimilates the waving clothes it is just awesome, it gives it the real touch.

The other thing i liked are the angel wings, the feathers look so real, and the movement effect it has is so beautiful it makes you feel
very relaxed and with good with yourself.

It seems the autor wants to express relief and victory to his people
or country, representing it with the angel.

i would like see the sculpture with the head and how it was originally, i know it is impossible but i think it would bring even more emotions to the sculpture, even tough it has a lot of them.

I really enjoy this piece. The movement it seems to have, its like if it was about to take flight at any moment without you noticing.
The diagonal line its built in helps the fact that it looks like moving, the wet looking clothes makes it look like it actually were being hit by the mist that the waves throw at the ship, the almost transparent of the clothes makes it look refined, and classy, since she was a goddess it makes sense.
Another thing that helps the feeling of movement are the fluent lines in the clothing, it looks as if being struck by gushes of air.
I could describe this piece as very sensual, stimulates the view in many ways, it stimulates in such way that if you relax and concetrate you can almost hear the distant waves at the front of the ship, smell the salt of seawater, feel the cold mist hitting your face, this piece could take you through infinite adventures through the endless imagination it provokes.

  8. Well first at all I want to say that for me this is really perfection. This sculpture can full all your senses since the first time you see it. I think that if you see the sculpture front to front, it could be a great experience, I really like to have it.
It is a piece of art by itself, but according with Ingarden, It is aesthetic object, because the people who see it search that aesthetic experience, He said that the piece of art is a piece of art by it self since it was made, but this piece jump all the barriers of time being a piece of art every time you saw it, it’s hard not concretize it, “fill the blanks”.
If we see it according with Sartre we can realize that It is a completely piece of art, in every way you see it. Why? Because it makes me feel something like I already said.
This piece is beauty too, It’s attractive and produce feelings, and is art too (I already told it) by the way that is an expression of a human.
This sculpture is Greek. They were one of the most influential cultures, I admire them because is amazing the works they do, for example this one, it’s an excellent interpretation of a woman’s body whit a wet dress. You can even see the navel show through the dress. I think they were very developed to their era. I don’t think that I’ll be able to make something like this, they were really good.

  9. Wow Aldo, I really liked your comment, it’s true what you said: “if you relax and concentrate you can almost hear the distant waves…” I think it could be part of concretize that Ingarden mentioned what confirms what all of we have said, that it’s art.

Oops I forgot put my information.

  10. I think this sculpture is transmitting something, because when I look at it, its like when I look at it, it would show me how well it is made, the details, the structure, like an object it can simulate movement, and even though it’s missing some parts it still looks almost perfect, that’s why it makes me feel like if I were the one in the situation, like if the water on her clothes were real, and when I found out about the story of the piece it was exactly what I had thought, a sign of triumph, freedom, it looks like placed at the front of a ship to demonstrate they won.
Knowing the story of the piece, it can really inspire me.

According to Sartre it can be categorized as art because it transmits something to me, it provokes victory and a sense of excitement every time I look at it. But according to Ingarden the artist was trying to transmit those feelings, and by me getting them, it’s still considered art because when I look at it I fill in the blanks, concretizing this piece.

    A little bit of english:

I really love this work, because this piece of art shows us the beauty of the visualization of the sculptor, the movement, and the realistic situation.

I think that the sculptor had a very strong idea about the perfection, and it is showed in the piece, he shows the perfection of the human body, the body of a goddess. And for shows the perfection used a glorious act like a victory; for that he did an angel body with a wet dress that said that the angel stand in a ship before a war showing victory and proud.

The only thing that I can say is that this it’s the most beautiful movement sculpture that I ever seen, it looks so real, like if you can touch and feel the wet dress and the soft feathers in her wings

(Sorry about my spelling and handwriting.)(level 3!!.....jajajaja...xD)

  13. I don’t know what’s more amazing: That the sculpture is so much beautiful, and shows so much power and movement; or the fact that it was made about two thousand two hundred years ago.

As a quick introduction: Nikí tis Samothrakis (or Winged Victory of Samothrace) is, as you may see, a sculpture about a Greek goddess. It represents Nike, the Winged Goddess of Victory, which in the Roman adaptation would be Victoria. As Nike was the goddess of victory, she was praised by generals each time Greek won a war. It is believed that it was ordered to be sculpted by Demetrius I Poliorcetes, because of his triumph over Ptolemy I’s navy at Salamis.

As for the sculpture itself, I must say it possesses great beauty. It is a real shame that the sculpture has lost its head and arms; I wonder how it used to look when it was complete. And another real shame is that the author is unknown: How bad that one of the most beautiful sculptures ever made does not have an artist to claim it! I believe that the artist deserves its name to be tattooed on the art History. I mean, it must have been his magnum opus (if not, God bless him! And that artwork MUST be found!!), and yet no one acknowledges him for it. Real shame, honestly.

I love the way it was sculpted! Here we can see an explicit proof of ancient Greeks’ obsession with human body’s perfection. Nike’s body is really sensual. She has the right proportions, and looks really, really beautiful. And those clothes are great too; they seem to blow with the wind, and it gives you the idea of being by the sea, right beside her. And it makes her look really good too –pardon my honesty, haha-.

All in all, the sculpture possesses great beauty: In the technique and in the artwork itself. It is very realistic, and very well done. It almost takes your hand and makes you concretize her itself.

    Victory deserves its icon!

I really like this sculpture even though it doesnt have head.

This sculpture seems like it has energy, movement, great power in its interior, I mean that represents greatness, divine things.

For me, the author tried to express the perfect thing, something made by god himself with all his effort, something that would amaze the world with just looking at it.

  15. This sculpture takes the words out of my mouth, its just so perfect. The dress that it has seems to be hand made with all the perfect details, like its wet and it sticks to the sculpture body, leaving to the delight of our sight the perfect body that is has.
The wings are also done in detail, you can actually see the feathers like if they were real.
The museum also knows how to work with the light, because with the light, it makes you feel that the sculpture its going to take flight at any time, making you want to see it for hours.
Even though it doesnt have a head, it so perfect it seem that it was made that way.

This sculpture it's amazing. I like the that it looks like the clothes are wet and ou can see the movement.
What i liked most is the wings' texture because you can imagine the movement in the feathers.
I think that with this sculpture, you can define the perfection, because it's true, ¡the sculpture it's just perfect!...each corner, each fold.
Until we can see the transparency of the clothing.

    I really enjoied this picture...

i like the sculpture dress, because its very beautiful how they made it. the wings are beautifull too, and i think its represent something relaced to the victory of some war or something like that.

i really enjoied the sculpture and i would like to visited and take some pictures for that.
The thing that i dont like is that it doesnt have a head and arms, and i think they destroied because they were jealues.

    i like it =)
